Blue Heelers are working dogs and are used to herd cattle in Australia, although Suzy had never seen a cow in her life. There were sheep everywhere in Canberra, and Suzy seemed fascinated by these, perhaps contemplating having a go at herding them due to the lack of any cattle around.

While living in Canberra, we adopted a puppy from a neighbor and named her Suzy. She was half Blue Heeler (Australian cattle dog) and half Border Collie. Suzy lived with us in Washington and Tokyo as well, but we entrusted her to Tim’s mother when we moved to Ankara since she was getting up in years and we had been warned that adequate veterinary services were sorely lacking in Turkey, especially for older dogs. Tim last saw Suzy in Oregon in 2000, shortly before she passed away at the age of 15.
