Precursor

We’re anxiously awaiting the emergence of billions of cicadas from the ground, where they’ve been for the past 17 years. I can hardly wait ;-). This nymph case was on our gate; I don't know where the cicada went and didn't look for it.

Best to view in "Original" because other versions resized by Pbase are decidedly
unsharp.

We had so many of them one year when Tom (my Washington DC son) was about four years old. He collected a bunch of them off the trees in the backyard and then came in the house to show me what he had found. I almost fell over...he had about twenty of them stuck to his shirt. To bad I didn’t have the presence of mind to take a photo! V

it appears hollow, and like an echo of a former life stage....cicadas make such a delightful sound in chorus, so garden conerts might be imminent..

I heard that the 17 year cicadas were set to emerge, how interesting. This is the pupal case, the cicada has left! The insects are eaten by many species of birds, I've seen chickadees catch them, so the birds will be happy! V

Great capture. It just the nymph stage skin, the freshly hatched mature cicada will be around nearby, and will be singing for a mate this evening.
