This might be the last picture of the heron because it’s gotten bitterly cold and is now snowing, and I suspect he might want a warmer place to hang out. We plan to check tomorrow to be sure, and it would be nice to see Constitution Gardens in the snow in any case.
I’ll be sad if he’s gone as I feel a certain affinity for this bird, who let me stand just a few feet from him while he was fishing, giving me a great opportunity for the close-up portraits in this gallery. But as I wrote before, now that he’s famous thanks to the Washington Post picture of him http://www.pbase.com/helenpb/image/168665931, I probably wouldn’t have that opportunity again anyway.
Best to view in "Original" because other versions resized by Pbase are decidedly unsharp.

We stopped by the lake on the National Mall again to see if the heron had flown south. Much to our surprise, he was still there, along with quite a few cormorants, despite the bitterly cold weather we’ve had over the past week, although it was almost 70 degrees on that particular day (!).
