Former District Grocery Store (1930s), now private home

This private home, which I think is actually two houses joined together, used to be a branch of District Grocery Stores, as shown in the 1932 photograph below. The window on the left is wider than the other two as it used to be the front door of the grocery.

A real estate broker neighbor gave me a letter that included old photographs and information on our immediate neighborhood. It was written by Betty Junge, who was born in 1927 in what is now his house on the 100 block of 10th Street NE. Ironically, he read of her recent death while sitting in the room where she was born.

Mrs. Junge wrote: “My Mother and Father, Charles Mills and Mary (Kelly) Sizer were married in 1914 so were one of the earliest tenants if not the first. Their four children were born in that house – my oldest sister Dorothy Carter Peyton in 1915, my brother Joseph Mills in 1917, my other sister Georgette Bryner in 1924 and myself Betty Junge in 1927. I am the only one left of that generation.”

That is a pretty interesting story. Photography is much more effective when it is tied to an accompanying backstory and you have communicated the pair very well! V

What a distinctive home. Your ample DOF gives me a clear view down the street.

They have done a beautiful job with the restoration. A beautiful job of capturing the architecture from this well selected POV. VV

the ivy adds to the squarish buildings appeal...there could be some spacious rooms in this one...what a fine shot too..
