Bathing in the Antique Pool

Founded in the early second century B.C., Hierapolis was an ancient city located on hot springs in classical Phrygia in southwestern Anatolia, or Asia Minor. Its ruins are adjacent to modern Pamukkale (see previous pictures) in Turkey and currently comprise an archeological museum designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

During the days of the Roman Empire, Hierapolis was a health center. In those years, thousands of people used to come to the baths, of which there were more than 15. Today's Antique Pool was shaped by the earthquake that struck in the seventh century, when the marble portico with its Ionic columns tumbled into the spring.
