The center of the 'world'

OK, this may be a strange looking picture, but it was taken in the Crypt, underneath the Rotunda in the US Capitol. It is the geographical center of Washington, D.C., which is divided into four quadrants -- northwest, southwest, northeast and southeast. This is the exact spot where they all meet.

George Washington was supposed to have been buried in the Crypt, but he stipulated in his will that he be laid to rest at his plantation in Alexandria, Virginia, on the banks of the Potomac. I can’t say that I blame him -- it’s a beautiful, peaceful place, whereas the US Capitol is not, especially now.

The ‘real’ last shot of the falls, posted earlier:

I wonder if this was the center before they chopped away the section west of the Potomac and gave it back to Virginia. Another interesting set of artifacts are the boundary markers of the original District of Columbia.

There is a bike ride where they go looking for these markers.
