Talons

We extended our stay in Abu Dhabi for a day because I found out about the Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital, the largest in the world, and just had to see it. You had to make a reservation two days in advance to be included on the two-hour tour.

This falcon was undergoing a procedure; I don’t think it was very serious, but they still have to put the bird under anesthetic for obvious reasons. I was amazed at its talons; easy to see why falcons are such successful birds of prey (and why you need protection when holding them on your arm!).

Also, thanks to people asking about our situation and well being here. The US Embassy in Riyadh has halted normal operations for two days due to “heightened security concerns.” We are OK, but it’s a pretty drastic measure. For an article about it, http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2015/03/14/us-embassy-in-saudi-arabia-halts-operations-amid-heightened-security-concerns/

Great close-up of the talons. Many people think they use their hooked beak to kill prey, but actually it is the talons that do the killing and the hooked beak is used for tearing flesh. Like having four daggers on each foot! I noticed some of the workers do not look to be Middle Easterners. Thanks for sharing another one of your adventures. Voted.

Those talons are amazing. Are they behind glass?

I've seen the grasp of talons from hawks before - it's brutal.

What a wonderful opportunity for you! We went to a sea turtle refuge in Georgia and watched them caring for them. Totally fascinating.
