Late Afternoon Fog ~ December 11 [5]

New London, Minnesota

The Mill Pond is essentially a wide spot in the Middle Fork of the Crow River and due to the current the Pond remains relatively open when other ponds and lakes have a relatively thick coat of ice. Still, there is no such thing as "safe ice" and even in below-zero temperatures open areas can appear for a variety of reasons.

Given a number of news stories about people going through the ice this season the Minneapolis Star Tribune newspaper is conducting an on-line poll as to what steps should be taken to keep people off the ice. Your vote is welcome: http://www.startribune.com/10142/story/871507.html

It looks seriously cold & miserable at the pond today. Brrrr. And heck yeah, natural selection, imho. Keep the family safe, Bud!

What a grim day this was. The festive lights in the background warm it up nicely though.

I voted with the majority in the newspaper poll, and I live where ice is only found in a drinking glass.

I love the tones and reflections in this shot Greg, it really is starting to look cold and damp!

Very nice shot....I don't think I'd dare to walk out there. It doesn't look solid.

Lovely scene with the river beginning to freeze. My only comment about people venturing onto the ice is the words of Ron White: You can't fix stupid. :)

Wonderful capture. Love the warm light from the house in the distance. :)

It is so much of a trip to walk on the thin ice though!

Ways to avoid being on the ice? .... Live in California.
Lovely shot.

I like the tones in this photo which denote a cold air mass.

Almost an eerie feeling to this photo. Like the setting for a ghost story.
