The young hero is a lithographer from the city who saves a country lass from the canal. A Town and Country artist story, probably containing many autobiographical elements. I enjoyed it.
A contemporary review in The Spectator (14th November 1925) summarises the novel as follows: "A mechanic-lithographer with ambitions to be an artist falls in love with a country inn-keeper's daughter and takes her back to the difficult regions of London's art colony. The girl's devotion and courage and the young husband's own innate goodness pull them through a difficult period, and in the end they return to the country, finding it a better place for workers and artists alike than London. An agreeable if not remarkable novel."
