DeVis' Banded snake, Denisonia devisi

Culgoa National Park, NSW

This snake was found in the riverbed of the Culgoa River on a fauna survey. It was photographed, but left alone, and half an hour
later was found again, this time having caught a hapless Desert Tree Frog, Litoria rubella. The snake made no attempt to swallow
the frog until the frog showed no sign of life. After the frog was completely swallowed the snake became pugnacious, although it
had apparently ignored the four photographers swarming around it as it was feeding. These snakes are known locally as
"Mud Adders" and are presently regarded as venomous, but not dangerously so.
