9 January 2005

A pretty grey, cold day so I decided to stay at home and do something I've been putting off for many months - backing up my photos to disks. I have a file of disks with copies of the photos as they came out of the camera and a second disk with the processed photos to use for 'slideshows'. I have no idea whether this is a good strategy - if you know a better way, do tell....

As I think about it Photoshop will let you print out contact sheets and that might be a way to back up special photos. For sure you will always be able to scan in the future. I have a $100 Epson 2480 that does a better job of scanning than the $1,000 one I had a few years ago.

There is a question about the life of CD's. But it is probably the best way to store pictures at this moment. DVD-R does allow you to store many more but the issue has always been getting them back years later when the hard and software has changed.

I would think that with really special ones you might want to print them out knowing that if you use good paper and ink you could always scan them in the future if you could not recover them from the magnatic media. For example my Ann pictures were scanned off of a 30 year old 35mm contact sheet and came out OK.

I definitely need to do this. Do you use Nero software?
