Dogs are cute, both the character and their looks. It was the K9 2008 event and I grabbed the opportunity to shoot `dog portraits'. What I didn't realise that it's very different than shooting human portraits, being that dog features are 3D with the frontal of his/her nose pointing out. So using a wide aperture such is 3.5 is not sufficient to have a complete focus on both the eyes and the nose and mouth. Either parts would be compromised depending on your focus point. Take for example of one shot I took, click on the thumbnail. Over here you would notice that the eyes are not focused while the focusing point's on the nose. I should think a stop higher would be sufficient to solve the problem. The reason for using wider aperture is to blur out the distracting background which would be the legs of the dog owners and also these dogs are just too hyperactive, running around non stop. Thought I would share with you guys this little tip I found out about shooting dogs.
