Anxious for Dinner

Southern Vancouver Island

This nest has three Northern Flicker chicks, almost ready to fledge, and they're all hungry! It took several visits to find a time frame when the light was bright enough on this nest to get a good shot, and it only lasted for 1/2 and hour. Northern Flicker facts: Young are raised in nest cavities, 6 to 16 feet from the ground. After hatching the nestlings remain safely in the nest for 24 to 27 days, where both parents feed the young. After fledging, the young continue to be fed by both parents and quickly learn how to forage for food on their own. ~ Washington Nature Mapping

Outstanding image. With the weather we have had this June I am surprised that you got any good light.
