10/20/08 - 3 Views of a Dahlia

Better late than never - yesterday's PAD posted today thanks to PBase's poor reliability and performance. Three separate images - not the same image cropped if it matters.
I wrote to PBase today (as though I believe they care) to tell them that unless PBase improved during the 10 months remaining in my current subscription after 5+ years I'd had it & would be gone.
My exit strategy for any of you with similar feelings - 1) I "grabbed" my 4100+ images plus folders, titles, & captions from PBase (checkout pbgrab.exe - Google it) for subsequent upload to another site; 2) I reviewed alternative sites and for my needs have tentatively chosen SmugMug (who coincidentally gives 50% off to anyone coming from PBase - but it's not about the lousy $23/year that PBase charges); 3) over the next 3-4 months I will recreate my galleries at SmugMug and *also* create my own photo viewing website (which is what I had done prior to moving to PBase in 4/04); 4) once my 2 alternatives are up & running I will spend the remaining time of my PBase subscription evaluating pros/cons among my three options. I hold out little hope that things will ever change here at PBase. My worst fear is that one day "PBase malaise" will strike (as it seems to do daily any more) once again with one big difference - it stays down forever as Slug & Emily finally close up shop.

This works well as a triptych, I think.

Sorry to hear about your troubles with PBase, and wishing you a relatively easy transition. Please do keep me informed of your whereabouts! :)
