W. Irving Wilhelm built bicycles in Reading, Pennsylvania; originally under
the Reading name, later as Wilhelm. The high wheelers were sort of a stabilized
unicycle, and sitting so high in the air, pretty easy to get in trouble with. Using
a chain and sprockets for a stepped up ratio between pedals and wheel allowed
smaller wheels for more stability and lower center of gravity - thus "safety."
