Also known as Wat Chao Phraya Thai or simply Wat Yai, this temple was built by King U-Thong in 1357 as a meditation retreat. King Naresuan built the temple's towering pagoda, visible from a great distance across the flat plains, at the end of the 16th century. The pagoda was constructed to rival the tall pagoda of Phu Khao Thong temple, which had been built by the Burmese, King Naresuan's archrivals
