Painted Bunting - male

Scientific name: Passerina ciris
Order: Passeriformes
Family: Cardinalidae

The Painted Bunting is found in the southern part of North America and is seen in thickets, woodland edges and brushy areas, along roadsides, in suburban areas, and gardens. The breeding range includes Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia and Louisiana. During the winter months, the bird migrates south as far as Panama.

A friend of mine in Louisiana USA use to catch these when they migrated through the area by placing a piece of bright red or yellow cloth suspended on a wire inside a cage with a spring trap door. When the Painted Bunding entered the cage to fight with what he thought to be another Painted Bunding he is caught.
