The Spangled Cotinga is found in Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Peru, Suriname, and Venezuela, in the Guianas, the Amazon Basin and the eastern Orinoco River Basin of Venezuela. Its natural habitat is tropical moist lowland forests.
The species is dimorphic with the male being a distinctive turquoise-blue with a large deep wine-red throat; the female is a medium grayish with black spotted mottling, scaly in appearance.
