This is the nave or central part of the church, which once was flanked by ten Corinthian columns separating it from the aisles.
The western church (of the Evangelists) was originally built in the late 5th century as a basilica with three naves.
Later it was transformed into a church with just one nave, but all remains of this younger version were removed.
