Izmir saat kulesi

view map

Built in 1901 this Saat Kulesi or clock tower has become the landmark of Izmir. The city might have had others, but in 1922 a fire destroyed, during the Greek-Turkish war, most of the old city. A terrible loss. The clock tower is at Konak, which can be considered the heart of the city. The sea is at two hundred meters, but as you can read in a comment below, it used to be at the seaside in the twenties. The shopping area of the bazar a similar distance to the other side.

Dear Mr.Dick,
Thanks for this excellent work. your site is really great and so valuable.
And I wanted to add one detail, may be you didn'd know. In the beginning of 20th century, this clocktower was just on the shore. Now it is 200-300 meters away from see.
If you need any help, please do not hesitate to contact. Thanks again.

Dear Dick,
You have changed our mind about Dutch. I suppose you are a Turkiye and Turkish people lover. Thank you for your big job. "Ellerine saglik" in Turkish.
