The Lions’ Gate originally had a somewhat Gothic arch at the top. It was probably built under Hattusili III, a king who is famous because of the Kadesh treaty concluded during his reign (thirteenth century BC) with Ramses II, the earliest peace treaty in human history. You can see it in the Ankara Museum of Anatolian Civilizations (see http://www.pbase.com/dosseman/ankara_museum_turkey ). The lions protected the city against evil from outside.
The best preserved lion in all its glory.
