18th century icons, from Aya Baniya church

Greek-orthodox (‘Rum’) 18th century icons, from the Aya Baniya church (Greek: Aya Payana), situated in the Turan district, in the old city of Isparta.

Left: ‘Saint Panteleimon, martyr’. He carries a medicine box (he was a physician, who practiced his profession free of charge. Other physicians brought his case before the Emperor Maximian. Panteleimon confessed to being a Christian and refused to offer sacrifice to the state gods. Consequently, Panteleimon was beheaded). His martyrdom is shown in the down right corner of the icon.
Center: ‘St.John the Forerunner, Angel of the Desert’.
Right: ‘Enthroned Christ Pantocrator’ (= All-Powerful). In the four corners: the Evangelists (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John).

Correspondent: J.M.Criel, Antwerpen.
Source: (amongst others) Website of Isparta Il Kültür ve Turizm Müdürlüğü.
