The lower courtyard, as seen from its northeastern corner.
On the opposite side (from left to right): the gallery in front of the entrance to the grave-and-mosque section, the octagonal Türbe (mausoleum) of Seyit Battal Gazi, and the Ümmühan Medresesi (high school), which is a former Byzantine monastery that was first transformed into a school by the Seljuk (13th century), and later into a ‘Çilehane’ in the 16th century. (Çilehane = House of ascesis, where Sufis would go to pray in seclusion).
The tables under the gallery on the right side of the picture are filled with all kinds of souvenirs, waiting for the large numbers of pilgrims that come to the sanctuary during the summer months.
