The Prom May 7

A prom couple caught in a quiet moment alone.

I've been photographing the prom and homecoming as part of my job with the newspaper for eight years - and, to my surprise, each year it's as fresh as the first - unlike many other annual events I've photographed over and over. I decided it's the kids who make it that way. They arrive in stretch limos, army trucks, tractors, Hummers, antique cars and in horsedrawn carriages. Family members - and many other people from the community - turn out to line a red carpet that leads from their vehicles into the prom. Their names are announced, the crowd cheers and takes photos. Hollywood premiere-style stuff without the slightly bored, been-there-done-this expressions.
At the first prom I went to, I spotted an elderly man toting his oxygen tank, standing and watching the kids. "Look at them," he said in response to my question as to why he was there. "They are all so beautiful."
They are. It's what keeps it fresh every time I go.

Beautiful photo. It looks like a movie image. I like the lighting and the composition a lot.

Very cool.. and I agree with you.. I didn't get to cover the prom (but i got a bunch of girls getting their hair done at the salon that afternoon! lol).. After my children were out of school and done with prom I had this feeling every year.. that I needed to see kids all decked out and happy, with life before them ... I would jump in my car and drive around to see them - the silly things. At McDonalds for supper... at gas stations.. at Wal mart.. everyday things turned special.
Excellent shot.

I like how you have given this a fresh perspective as well.... you can tell they are a lovely young couple from this view as well as the more traditonal.

I like the nontraditional shot from the back, being able to see the other photographers in the background. His cooler than thou, dome-propped shades ain't so bad either. :)

A very romantic portrait, Donna. I like the gentle light and actually like that they are not facing us. Very moody picture. We do not have prom's in germany, but we have the big dance after we all take dance lessons, which is magical. Wonderful capture.
