Bruce Bailey, thank you very much for sharing that information. That is what I suspected in September and December of 2008 and said so in my comments further below. And thanks for your picking the brain of the other gent and looking for the photo.

dThe city of south miami had its own numbers starting at red road to Ludlam so the 717 seems logical. I know a guy who has lived a few blocks over since about 1949 and I will pick his brain. I will also try to find a photo of the gas station there later on.

Wow, what a diversity of opinions as to where this was. What baffles me is the 717 South Dixie Highway address from the postcard. I want to thank everyone for their comments and I'm sure more will flow in over time. I myself don't have a clue because of all my time in the north central and northwest parts of the county and anything south of the airport might as well be North Key West to me.

I am 99% sure this is at the crossing of 80th street. It remained as that building having a gas station added to the south (right in photo). It was a Shell station until around the late 60s when Shell moved a block south where it is today. It then was an Exxon until torn down to be a record store in the 80s and is not a CVS. Tee-pe lounge was just north and would be the left of the building. I have lived in this triangle since 1968 and things really have changed. I suspect that the postcard photo would be after 1949 from the cars. The trees behind are Fuchs Park.

I grew up 5 blocks away from (Bill) Flynn's Dixie Ribs. It was located on the northbound (east) side of U.S.1 about 150 feet south of Coral Reef Drive (S.W. 152nd Street), right next to a Phillip's 66 gas station. This isn't Flynn's, I can say that with 100% certainty. I'm sorry I can't help to determine exactly where it was, but that's all I know for sure...that it isn't Flynn's.

Hey Angelo, thanks for coming back to post. According to this sitehttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Miami,_Florida , South Miami's boundaries were originally much larger in size and the city's leaders reduced the city's limits twice in 1933 and 1937. If South Miami had their own street numbering system maybe the Whip Inn kept it for a while until addresses were changed to the county system? I don't know but just want to suggest a possibility.

717 s dixie hwy on maps.google.com shows the metrorail..so this was probably right by the train tracks..between riviera and granada....if it was in fact homestead then it would have either have been n/s federal hwy or homstead blvd...city hall is at 790 n homestead blvd and across the way is the rodeo. by lucy street (s homestead blvd) is a gas station and a car dealership....it just seems like the coral gables 717 has to be the answer since south miami borders it and perhaps at one time they were lumped in the same lot....coral gables also shot out to coral way/73 ave...the incinerator? still operates on that site

Not unless the 136th Street location equates to 717 South Dixie Highway in South Miami. I don't know much about the south end of the county, compared to the north end, but South Miami was never that far south.

Well Ray, since the back of the postcard says "South Miami" have you considered the possibility that South Miami had their own street numbering system back in the 40's? I don't know but that's the first thought that popped up in my mind.

Is anyone else confused by this address? 717 on what grid? That low of a number would have been right downtown. In Coral Gables it would be in a residential area near UM that would have been more developed.

Any chance it was actually a Homestead address? I don't know why, but I'm seeing a used car lot around a building like this. I have no idea where, but I think I've seen it before.

Structure wise, it almost looks like the snack bar and second floor projection booth for a an old drive in theater, not restaurant.
