1950's - Pete and Jean Adleman's gift shop on East 21st Street

E. 21st Street and E. 4th Avenue, Hialeah, Florida


Thank you to Linda Adleman Bolinger for contributing this great old image. Linda says that her dad, William "Pete" Adleman, and mom, Jean Hubbard Adleman, bought this gift shop from Carl Ault after Pete returned home from World War II. Linda says that the railroad tracks ran between Hialeah Park and the above gift store and she used to wave to the train engineers all the time and that they would blow the whistle and wave back.

Don, you are correct...F.A. "Tony" Benedetto owned a barber shop on the NW corner of Palm and 21st. He was a Hialeah city councilman for a long time. When I got my first traffic ticket in South Miami at the age of 19, he went with me to traffic court in front of Judge Thomas E. Lee...never said a word, just stood there...Judge Lee let me off, no fine. Dade County politics, LOL

Tony was a city councilman and a barber by trade. I think his barber shop was on Palm and the northwest corner of W. 21st Street but I could be wrong. Maybe he owned a gas station too but I never read that. Jack Cherry owned a Cities Service gas station at Palm and E. 54th Street or so, across from the Catalina Shopping Center, and he was a city councilman.

This was a wonderful old place. Tony and Dee Benedetto, our friends, lived right around the corner on E 20th St. We would pass this place on our way to their house. I developed a love for pink flamingo lawn ornaments here...always asked for some to put in the yard, but mom and dad never bought any.
