Moms at home when the kids got home from school

USA

And a lot of them didn't have a car to use during the day so they didn't have to clog streets near their kid's school picking them up at dismissal time. Kids walked home or rode school buses or got rides home with friends.

I rode my bike to and from elementary school...all the years that I attended Coral Reef. But thinking about it now, I'm pretty sure my parents took me and picked me up when I was in the 1st grade.

This looks like one of the real early 'Father Knows Best' shows

My best friends and I would walk together to and from school every day. Southside Elementary.
Parents didn't worry about abductions, molesters, bullies and so on. We even got paddled (HORRORS!) in the principal's office a couple of times! Had my mouth washed with soap (for something I said which to this day I can't remember) while my teacher watched. And my mother NEVER objected to this, knowing full well that I probably deserved my punishments.
Today, lawyers, grief councilors, therapists and the police would be involved if these things happened, while the parents would defend their "little angels" who can do no wrong.
Yes, times sure have changed. But not for the better.

I rode a bicycle to school and back from grade school through my junior year of high school. That was the primary mode of transportation for kids in the forties and fifties.
