I have a diagnostic disk loaded with test software I use to fix Macs with. The wallpaper is the TV Test Pattern as above. I don't know how many hours of my young life I spent watching the test pattern waiting for programming to come on.

I remember occasionally waking up a bit too early on a Saturday morning and sitting in front of the TV, waiting for the test pattern to disappear and the cartoons to start.

The circles were used adjust the linearity of the TV screen. So people didn't look too tall or too fat. The numbers would show the resolution of the video at the center and in the corners.
