1958 - Masters Field Course - Motorsports Racing at former Marine Corps Air Station Miami, now Miami-Dade College North Campus

Master's Field, Northwest Dade County, FL view map

This motorsports course was used for races in 1958 and 1959. A planned race in 1962 was canceled due to the use of the base for staging military supplies and equipment during the Cuban Missile Crisis. It was located on NW 27th Avenue east of Amelia Earhart Field on the other side of the railroad tracks. This site was later occupied by Dade County Junior College, renamed to Miami-Dade Junior College, renamed to Miami-Dade Community College and now named Miami-Dade College.

The professional sports car race had Carrol Shelby in his famous striped coveralls, his cowboy hat, and was driving a monster 5.7 liter Maserati. Lee Lilley ran Corvettes which later raced at LeManr 24 hour. many oter vell know local drivers like "Smokey Drolet,Johnny Cuevas, and many others. I was 15-16 years old at that time.

Ha. A lot of drag racing was done in the back parking lots of Miami-Dade in the late 60s, too.

I can remember seeing a race here, wouldn’t have a clue about date except ‘50’s. Believe the race was put on by “The Greater Miami Racing Association” and was won by the late Rags Carter in the P-34.
