1959 - Northside Shopping Center under construction

NW 79 Street and 27 Avenue, Dade County, Florida

The view is looking northwest. Part of the Frank 'n Bun's parking lot is in the lower left hand corner. The old strip shopping center is visible to the west of the new Sears Auto Center going up in the northwest corner of the intersection, along with a house here and there. All of them were demolished by the time the shopping center opened in February 1960. A drive-in theatre's parking lot is visible in the upper right corner.

On October 29, 1959, L. Allen Morris of The Allen Morris Company wrote that the Frank J. Rooney construction company was pouring the last of the concrete that day for the walls, ceilings, and stock room areas. It had been ten months since groundbreaking of the shopping center. He wrote that the center's grand opening was scheduled for the week of February 15, 1960, the height of the Miami tourist season. The elevated truck ramp was finished in September and proving very useful in delivery of construction material to all buildings. Sears was expected to move into their store for fixturing on November 1st. Bill Bradford, a long-time member of the Allen Morris organization, was handling the leasing out of their leasing offices at 2775 NW 79 Street. His phone number was OXford 1-1712.

On July 15, 1959, Mr. Morris wrote that Frank Rooney's construction company was pouring 400 to 600 cubic yars of concrete each week. Over 5,000 cubic yards (approximately 10,000 tons) had been poured in place. Forty tenant leases had been signed and approximately 94% of retail store space had been leased. In July they were hoping for a grand opening in January 1960.

Northside hosted 25¢ movies for 10-12 age kids during the first summer in sort of a banquet room near the bakery (NW corner). Sears had theeee best candy counter. Dad bought Mom a diamond ring at Sears (mid-60s); still her favorite ring. When I started to drive, I bought most of my shirts at the National Shirt Shop. Definitely, theeee place to shop in northwest Miami.

Glenda, you should visit Robbin's Memories in the Old Hialeah section of this site. There are some gents who lived in the Bell Haven trailer park who would love to chat with you about the park and various people who lived there. Here is a link to the page and you'll have to scroll down to read the comments. http://www.pbase.com/donboyd/memories_hialeah_robbin_current

I can remember the amusement park but I never could remember the name until I found this site.

My Grandmother would send me a dollar every month and my dad would drive me up from Opa-Locka to ride the rides. Good Times

Thanks for your memories Debbie! Sounds like you had a great wild time growing up down here, especially the parts about swiping your parents' car to go to Pizza Palace and loving drive-ins!! I'm going to take a wild guess and presume you didn't see too much of the movies playing, eh?

Dear Guest, I do remember Funland Park. My mother took my sister and I there every Wednesday
It was pepsi cola bottle nite and it took 5 bottle caps to ride. I remember the tiltoworld and the wild mouse. Boy the rides were scary at 9 and 10yrs old. I never have really experience times like that again. It was great times in the late 50's and early sixties in Miami.

the mall is still there and i think has the distinction of being the first of its kind in the country. i worked in it while working for bellsouth. theres a cavernous (and creepy) hall way down the center for store owners to get stuff in and out of their stores without having to use the front doors of their stores. it rather unnerving as its dark, not air conditioned and much like a dungeon back there.

on the bottom right theres a gas station which is no longer there. next to it and not in the pic is the northside central office for the telephone company. on the south west corner of this intersection sits the remaining royal castle burger shop.
