1962 - Pan American Division Manager William F. Raven at inaugural of new MIA-SJU-LIS route with B707-121 N711PA in background

Miami International Airport, Florida

From the state archives description: "MIA Airport ceremony preceding the takeoff of Pan American's inaugural jet flight from MIA/SJU/LIS. The airline's Latin American Division Manager, William Raven pointed to the benefits Florida will receive from the new Mid-Atlantic route to Europe."

The aircraft in the background was Clipper America, a B707-121 that inaugurated the first scheduled passenger jet flight by an American airline and trans-Atlantic jet service on October 26, 1958 with Pan Am Flight 114 on a New York - Gander - Paris routing. This B707 served Pan Am from 1958 to 1974 and was renamed Clipper Mayflower in later years.

Mario, that was my father , Ernest Foss, doing arrivals and departures. He was PAA advertising manager, Latin American division for over 20 years. "The world's most experienced airline".

It was always a magical sound over the public address system at MIA when during the 60-s and 70's you would hear, in English & Spanish, "Pan American announces...." or, "La Pan American anuncia....." which somehow seemed to carry weight and far more meaning that whenever its competitors made a similar announcement. Then again, Pan Am always did.
