Note the long line of coconut palms that were planted several years before and stretched from Red Road (W. 4th Avenue) to Ludlam Road (W. 12th Avenue). All of the palms were removed for this road widening and I hope they were transplanted somewhere but I suspect they were destroyed in typical waste of public tax dollars. The W. 84th Street widening was long overdue because the volume of traffic on it far exceeded the volume on Miami Lakes Drive (NW 150th Street to NW 154th Street) from Red Road to the Cypress Village Shopping Center in the 7300 block and that was widened about 16 years before in a shady county commission deal that allowed developers to build more homes and businesses west of the original Miami Lakes and the Palmetto Expressway, even though traffic-clogged NW 154th Street west of the Palmetto has been and is an "F"-rated roadway. This road widening project on W. 84th Street (NW 138th Street) took slightly over 2 years from start to finish as I recall because it wasn't finished until the first part of 2012.
