Also known as the "Bay Bridge" and the "William Preston Lane, Jr. Memorial Bridge", named after the governor of Maryland who initiated its construction. The original span opened in 1952 and the parallel span opened in 1973. The bridge is 4.3 miles long and is part of U. S. routes 50 and 301 connecting the rural eastern shore of Maryland with the urban western shore at Annapolis.
