On D Day, elements of the 82nd Airborne overshot the drop zone and came down in the village of Sainte Mere Eglise. Many were killed by German troops as they came down.
Paratrooper John Steele landed on the church roof and became tangled, where he remained for hours.
Today, a mannequin of Steele hangs by parachute in the same spot.
