It's not just one piece of crown molding. A strip goes on the wall first and there's another strip of 1/4" plywood that forms the shelf. Bill also routed out a groove in the molding so the shelf can slip into it. The lip created above the shelf provides a "stop" for the frames. Bill said he's give me a diagram to post. Isabel

Oh that is really neat Isabel. I need to get John to do that for me. That is a great way to display photos.
