This is especially helpful for lenses with noisy focusing mechanisms, like that of the Canon EF 35mm f/2. Set the focus button on "M". Half press the shutter! Watch for the flashing red focus point in the viewfinder as you rotate the focus ring. Even though you may not see well enough to nail the focus manually, that flashing light will tell you you have achieved the best focus.
