Monaincha was a seventh century monastery built on an island on lake Cre. On of the traditions was that nobody died and it it became known as the Island of the Living. The modern name of the the monastery is loosely derived by the Irish name Inis na mBeo. There was a second island which was said to have been linked by wooden walkways. The present buildings are from the 12th Century onwards. The lake was drained in about 1800 so the monastery was no longer an island.
