Sun Dog 1.jpg

I had taken a sunset photo when I saw this sundog. This is the southern one. The northern one was paler. I tried different exposures and this is the one that shows it the best. When I looked at my setup photo for the setting sun, I had both sun dogs on it, but they were more light arcs than rainbow colored. I will try more of these and see if I can get the exposure better.

More information on sun dogs is here:

Neat. I have tried a few shots of the sun dogs. Hard for me to capture.

very nice capture. just to add to the sun dog explanation...they occur due to the light being scattered off ice crystals in high cirrus clouds, and are sometimes part of sun halos, which as DeMorcan says, completely encircle the sun.

See, PaD is educational and entertaining.

That's cool, I didn't know that about sun dogs. Do you know why they're called dogs? Nice exposure.

In late afternoon, the sun will often have "rainbows" on the north and south side of it. They are slightly dimmer than a rainbow following a rain. Sometimes they will make a complete circle around the sun, although I have only seen the bottom of the circle from an airplane. When I was growing up they were called sundogs and meant bad weather the next day.
