I was unhappy with some "grain" in the sky yesterday shotting the river. So, I took it out to a marina to see if I could trace the problem down. This is one of the photos I took while out there. For some reason when I work with a TIF in photoshop, it loses the EXIF data. I am not sure why. JPGs do not do that. I wanted to work on this in TIF so I could change programs to resize it smaller without losing the readability of the sign. Still unhappy with the losses when downsizing since I am looking at it full screen on the same resolution monitor, it should not change. Today was testing day. :)

I'm not sure I understand what your concerns are here. I might have to come back to this tomorrow when I am less tired and reread what you wrote. It seemed as if you were wondering how to keep a rich sky while maintaining the subject's color and details? If this is the question then I would have to say that my way of dealing with this is to shoot two or three identical compositions with metered for different parts of the photo and then I combine the different shots utilizing the best parts from each exposure.

But, I suspect this isn't what you are asking.

By the way, this photo is great. I like the composition AND the washed out sky. Well done.

A sky such as the one you had this day is tough to shoot, you did a great job on exposing the statue and the background, I just love marina's, can't wait to get back to ours.

I lost the EXIF while I had it as a TIF passing it between programs. I use an umbrella and my hat to shade some foregorund things and increase the saturation. This space was the opposite, shaded and too large for the reflectors. I took one exposed for the wooden pirate. Then this one I used fill flash that get some of the background. It was a poor sky and I was getting some shots with grain in the water also. But I did find a polarizer and split density gives me a fighting chance. But the sd is 50% and that is not where I want the split. Time for the gaffers tape will fix anything solution.

Where you able to retain EXIF with this one (jpeg?) That fisherman looks a little weathered. Wish I could figure how to maintain sky colors with rich colors in the foreground.

Nice shot, hard part is getting the sky to show up without destrotying the rest of the detail.
I have the same problem with PS, very annoying.
