There is a traditional Hawaiian legend about these blossoms, which I will surely get wrong here, but it had to do with a pair of lovers separated by a vengeful spirit.
They were turned into half flowers, one that grew near the sea, and one that grew high on the mountain, neither capable of being a complete flower without the other.
