9/20/04 - Vision

Washington, DC

This is a photo of one of the sculptures in the FDR Memorial in D.C. that I took a while back. (Karen Leaf was shooting somewhere else in the memorial.) I wanted to do something special with this photo, which originally included the entire statue. I wanted to experiment with a high-key effect and stark contrast. The original photo is certainly not high-key. I also wanted to emphasize the visionary gaze of the face. Before deciding on a high-key approach, I tried (my typical) black background, but the effect was, obviously, that of FDR looking into a dark future, something I think he seldom did. The current image does, I think, a much better job of conveying the idea of FDR's optimism and his vision for the country in some of its darkest hours. (Hope that doesn't come across as too corny.) (Linda, I guess this qualifies as one of those going-to-the-park shots. Sorry. :))

PS - Remove background (easy due to great contrast between statue and background - but still feathered selection by 2 pxls); Insert white-filled layer below image. Use simple Brightness/Contrast to increase both so that image faded into white background; Frame.

Whatcha using big words with me for? I assume verdigris means "green stuff looking". :)

Brilliant!

Good work; the highkey look is effective and it still retains the verdigris, good combination.

Excellent what you've done with this stature.. I thought it was a very high key portrait of someone from the thumbnail .. not a statue. Nicely done, Dennis
