This leg of the journey is now complete. I have been out there, on the trail for 3 hours and 13 minutes.
I sit down at a "sidewalk cafe" to gaze across at the railway station and the means of my journey
home. Katoomba may be down at mouth but it is largely populated by people like me ... retired,
arty, opinionated, grumpy. There is something about such places which leads to better coffee. We
upper Blue Mountain types will simply not tolerate crook coffee - after all, we spend a lot of time
drinking it up there and we know what we like.
Springwood is populated by people who aren't much like me at all ... young, employed, earnest and
occupied by the concerns of life immediately in front of their noses. Such places have no time or
inclination for contemplation. I fear for the quality of the beverage I have ordered.
In due course the coffee arrives .... and it is truly awful.
