Once on the other side, things look distinctly downbeat. I am standing on the inevitable "Railway
Parade" linking Hazelbrook and Woodford. The residential area in this part of the mountains is
distinctly depressed. It lies between the "lower mountains" whose economy is centred around
people who commute to work in Sydney and the "upper mountains" whose economy is focused on
tourism and relatively "well off" retirees. Here, there is a lot of old fashioned unemployment and
low real estate values.
