Thanks all. - The 50mm/1.4 is really an excellent lens but Rod is right. It would not make much difference if this shot would have been taken with f/1.8. The extremely shallow DOF is mainly caused by the extension tube which allows a much closer distance to the object and has a similar effect as lens with a long focal length. Probably no need to see your dealer and buy the 1.4 if you already own the 1.8.

Don't forget people that Gerald used an extension tube to get this close. So even though the50mm 1.4 is a great lens the 50mm 1.8 would give a similer effect if used with an extension tube...........................I think:-)

WOW! Great image! Now I'm getting lens envy. Nice lighting, perspective and impressive DOF! CJ

Impressive DOF here. Decided, I should buy this lens

I like the way you concentrated on one letter as you could have done this numerous ways with the DOF. I also like the textures. Great job. jano

way cool! I'm with Rod here, taking a simple object and making it as interesting as this.... The DOF is way awesome. So that's what f1.4 looks like.

I opened the thumbnail to say wot a silly shot, but when opened it's really good. The dof running down the shot looks great. You made a great shot out of nothing here Gerald. Well done mate:-)
