Artist's Bookcase

Manitou Springs, CO

This was taken in the studio of a local artist, C.H. Rockey. A very interesting fellow who has a taste for the surreal and paints in the style of Van Gogh. He also does considerable sculpting, of which this bookend is a taste. He has a show every five years and sells around 100 pieces, usually totaling in the $0.5Meg range, most of which he gives to charity. If you google his name you'll find he's a pretty cool guy. We spent the afternoon with him discussing art, the world situation and love. The latter of which, he's writing and illustrating book about.

Thanks for the suggestion and comments, Michael & Bob. I did burn down and change the color of the corner of the painting (bottom right) and I do think it makes a definite difference for the better. I also removed the clock (turned face away) at the lower left and changed the crop a bit. This studio is loaded with symbols of which the clock face was one, but there was no way to make "its" point and it was distracting (seems to me). Thanks again, -mikey

This is a good composition Mikey, I like the textures and the art work mix. It is interesting to me that 'Grosset' is a top local white wine of excellent character.... very appropriate with the title 'Lust for Life' ... lol!

I agree with Michael, it would enhance the mood if you were to 'soften' the luminance of the corner. The white frame tends to be a little too prominant in my humble opinion, it tends to conflict with the beautiful texture of that wooden shelf.

Great post ~ Regards melbob

Well, I don't think we've had a bookcase yet...good idea. I like the "Lust of Life" title along with the sculpture and handwritten notes. I think a tad of gentle burning in the corners of the right side could add a bit of depth to the image. -Michael
