Oh, Daniel, they're really simple to do! Just lasso the whites of the eyes, feather one pixel, then use the middle slider in levels to make them brighter. Trust me, it's no biggie and I think you'll like the results. :) ~ Lonnit
As long as you talk about giving the overall image «more contrast», Lonnit, I agree and might want to check it out. But when you start talking about «brighten the eyes and teeth» selectively or «tweak the eyes to give them more detail and define pupil from iris», you show that you and I play in two different leagues: I think those are wonderful suggestions for an aspiring pro, but definitely too much trouble for an—albeit ambitious—hobbyist... — db.
The woman shot is a technically better shot, in terms of the processing and lighting, but the subject in this is better. There's no story of interest in the woman shot. You again caught the waiter partial-faced, which I still like, but I find myself not caring about the subject b/c she's not doing anything of interest, nor is she engaged with the camera. At least this guy is trying to make a connection with us. Perhaps if you tweaked this man to give more contrast in the skin it would be more pleasing. You could also brighten the eyes and teeth, which would add contrast as well. If possible, perhaps you could tweak the eyes to give them more detail and define pupil from iris. I definitely wouldn't swap out the woman for this, I'd vote for you playing with this as I described. He's actually somewhat of a charming subject and I like his eye contact. ~ Lonnit

I substituted this for another image I had in mind: <http://www.pbase.com/image/62753814 but found that composition partly too similar to number 3. Would you have preferred it?? There’s time enough to change my mind again. But let’s hear first what others think... — db.

By comparison to the other gentleman, this is flat and soft with poor lighting. You can't pass this off on us when you've shown what wonderful ability you have with the other. You've raised your own bar above this. ;) ~ Lonnit
