I don't know, from what I can tell the boat(?) looks broken down and sinking or sunk, I am sure that they would let him have it cheap. Anyway, I am not debating the selective focus, more of the way it contrast with the infocus area and how that makes it look. Maybe instead of him wondering about the unattainable he is more worried about the pollution that is seeping into the water that he is tryig to catch a fish from.

To me (coming from middle America) it looks more like a guy fishing in a crappy and probably polluted area, and I find that interesting. Although when I fish the fish may be just as polluted I tend to fish in a area that is somewhat beautiful, definately not industrial. I also find it interesting that he is using a stick and a string, old school for me, but just goes to restate the differences and what makes the image interesting.

Regardless of all the above I do think that the fishing pole blends too much with the BG and the viewer has to work to hard to see it, and some may not really see, or interpet it at all.

I cannot disagree more with Chris. The selective focus in this case brings our focus to the man. The background being out of focus serves to show that what's there is unattainable in his circumstance. It fades from reality to just a fantasy, the man's fantasy. -- Victor

Ser. Your images have a commercial/advertising feel to them. This one is no exception...I could see this as an advertisement for something...Regardless...what I am trying to say is I enjoy seeing a Sergio photo each challenge. Keep up the fantastic work! You have a great talent and it is always fun to see what you will produce :-)!

Cheers,
;-D

Sergio, well you certainly have gotten rave reviews to this point. I think it is a nice image.

However, I am not sure that the shallow DOF is serving you well here, the foreground is in relative sharp focus, and the BG kind of looks like a matte painting (fake), thus I don't think such a shallow DOF works for me. I also think that the fishing pole gets lost in the image, and I think that it's tangent created with the boat causes some kind of a muddiness in that area (although I am not sure that you could have gotten a better angle to clear it up). I would however had looked to seperated from the ship a little.

All that said it is a very interesting and nice picture.
