You are MUCH better at adding accessories than I am! Great lighting and atmosphere.

Thanks for commenting Kelly and Cindy! As is obvious, this is an old photo. It was first entered in Challenge 8 - Liquids - hence the bunch of comments from 2004.

MarkJay, thanks a lot for the input - very much appreciated! I see what you mean by the placement of the coffee cup, but I am not sure I agree... The way I did it, my main subject (the coffee in the cup) is placed perfectly on the grid of thirds and the line from the cookies to the grinder, via the cup and french press form a segment of a circle encircling the whole coffee beans. With your suggestion the line would take on more of a zig-zagging pattern. Of course, that could probably work well too. --Olaf

Excellent image, Olaf!! ALl the colors of your props work well together, along with nice soft lighting for a pleasing image. A suggestion: next time you might want to move the coffee cup a tad to the right and set back a tad more as well as my eyes see it as being in an awkward position in the image. Again, nice work! Outstanding job Olaf!!! This is your most professional image to date IMO! And, as for the DOF, I LOVE that the cookies get sharper as you go it. Probably b/c the thing I'd most crave in the shot is the cookies! LOL! But I do LOVE how those cookies become sharp. Big round of applause coming at you from NY! Kudos. :) ~ Lonnit

Shu, I was lazy and copied this over from challenge 8 (eligible gallery), instead of going through the trouble of finding it in my archive (CDs) and re-uploading it... BTW, thanks for the nice comment! --Olaf

Thanks Ed, for your comment and honorable mention! Regarding the DOF, I had lots of shots with even shallower DOF and I liked those a lot too, but chose this one in the end, as I liked the composition the best in this one. I do feel the plane of focus is a little too far back in this one though. I wanted the hot coffee in the cup to be sharp and the rest to be more or less out of focus... Of course, the cookies are in almost the same plane as the coffee cup... --Olaf

Excellent idea and well composed. (*) A bit more DOF, maybe? -Ed Hahn

Neil and Roberta,
thank you for your kind comments! I gave myself a tougher-than-expected assignment when I decided to make this photograph: all those reflective surfaces, and only very simple and temporary means of controlling and modifying the light, made it quite a challenge. That's just great though, because it is by forcing yourself into new territory that makes you grow. Not totally satisfied myself, this was the best I could muster within the time I had available. So I am very pleased by your comments: the things you mention in your comments are the exact things I was after in making this image, thank you! --Olaf

Olaf,
I really like this image. It has a very professional quality. Clean, well composed with effective DOF. It would make a great product shot for advertising! Roberta

I can almost smell the coffee and taste the cookies. What time should I come over for a cup? :)
