September 3 2006:
Waiting for the Preacherman

I met this man in Newbury today, and learnt that many years ago he had helped build the car park I had parked on. Upon seeing him, he was clutching a bible and was waiting for the vicar to open up the church for the service.

Tip: Upon asking this man for a picture, he agreed happily but then simply froze. So I took this further picture when he thought I had finished and was rather more relaxed.

A nice natural portrait, with such a warm and kind smile. Really like your tone and contrast too. Great that you "unfrozen" him :-) Thanks for the tip!

Una hermosa expresión que te vincula con él. Una afortunada elección de modelo!

This is brilliant Ray. The expression on his face is one that makes you keep looking. There is so much in this. The frozen subject is a real problem for most of us but you found a way past it. I'm totally impressed

The few times I have asked for a portrait of someone, I find that is the best way to get them as ease. This is a brilliant shot, btw.

Such a warm and kind expression. The reduced contrast works well here too. I really like this Ray - v.

Great portrait and a tactic i use quite alot, either before they
think you are ready or as here just after they think you are done

Very nice work of an eccentric looking chap, full of character :-)

Looks like a poet to me.
Maybe he does his poetry right from the bible.
Jen Bixler03-Sep-2006 21:21
He reminds me of the actor, Patrick Cranshaw, who recently passed. Wonderful capture. He is full of character and has soft eyes.

A warm and spontaneus portrait, Ray! Definitely your tip is worthy, it's so difficult to take lively portraits of people who freeze in a pose...even though they want sincerely to cooperate.
But it's not enough withouht the feelings of the photographer, which can create an empathy...
You have this peculiar quality too, it explains the results of your portraits...
