August 6 2004:
My Forefathers’ Church

Saffron Walden, Essex

This is St Mary’s the Virgin Parish Church in Saffron Walden, Essex. Today I made the 80 mile trip to this town to start research on my ‘Richardson’ ancestors, a number of whom got married in this church.

Saffron Walden is so named as a result of its crocuses that were farmed here in olden times – but this died out about 300 years ago when cheaper imports were made. A short history of this crop in the area is told here.

It really is a lovely, largely unspoilt, market town and was featured in the 1980’s “Lovejoy” TV series starring Ian McShane as an “enterprising” antiques dealer. I wanna go back!

Thanks

Yes, the trees have added to what must be a spectacular piece of architecture in reality.

Yep to echo the others, it's the framing that makes this exceptional! Interesting story here!

I like the way you have it framed by the trees. Nicely done.

Nice composition. Quite like the way the shape of the tree's is symentrical, and almost looks like the outline of an owl! :)

In the most polite constructive way possible, I would say the white boarder doesn't add much, it is bright and large, and very slightly destracting, perhaps a thin dark black one, i always personally think black boarders make an image look quite neat.
